Nuwaraeliya District Secretariat is one of the five Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Nuwara Eliya District which bordered by the Kandy and Badulla Ratnapura Districts of the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat is more important for a number of reasons.
Nuwara Eliya is the only city built on the British model established in Sri Lanka by the Portuguese, Dutch and English during the colonial period. It is located within 14 square kilometers of the city of Nuwara Eliya in the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat Division.
The city of Nuwara Eliya is located at the foot of Pidurutalagala. The city is important both locally and internationally due to its cool climate. The city of Nuwara Eliya is located at 6280 feet above sea level. Nuwara Eliya was ruled by the Walapane District until the complete conquest of Sri Lanka in 1815 during the British rule. History states that the camp of Keppetipola Maha Nilame, who led the freedom struggle against the British in the Kandyan Uprising of 1818, was located at Pattipola, Kadapola, Shanthipura, Nuwara Eliya.
The city of Nuwara Eliya was formed against the backdrop of the 1818 uprising. August 11, 1821 Nuwara Eliya is named as a city by the English. Thereafter, from 1828 to 1948, English rulers and other officials, including governors, reportedly administered Sri Lanka from Nuwara Eliya. The main reason for this is that the present Presidential Palace was the official residence of the then Queen. At present there is evidence in Nuwara Eliya that the Prime Minister had another official residence and the Ministers had other official quarters.
The fact that all these are located in the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat is another reason for their uniqueness. All administrative activities have been carried out in the Walapane district centering on Nuwara Eliya since the British rule. 1876 Assistant Governor's Agents were appointed to administer the Nuwara Eliya District. Buildings such as the Presidential Palace in 1883, highways, military bases, resorts, tourist hotels, the plantation economy as well as tea estates were all built at the behest of the British.
Sri Lanka has been known as an agricultural country throughout history. In the days of King ahaparakum, even foreigners traded food in this country, hence the name of the granary of the East. For this reason, previous kings throughout Sri Lanka built about 350,000 tanks in this small motherland to supply water for agriculture. Before the provision of water for the protection of these reservoirs, the kings had a great responsibility. Therefore, Pidurutalagala Kanda, Pidurutalagala Kanda, Kirigala Potta, Thotupala Kanda, Greatwestern Kanda, Haggala Kanda and Haggala Kanda, which are located in the highest mountainous areas of Sri Lanka without any government ordinances, are located in the catchment areas. Seems to have dAlthough the highlands were subject to the plantation economy during the British colonial period, the English also adopted a program of conservation of intensive water catchment areas (swamps).
Therefore, the area belonging to the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat occupies a very special place among the Divisional Secretariats of Sri Lanka.one. The Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat also functions in parallel with the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat. All Sinhala, Tamil, Burgher and Muslim communities live in this Divisional Secretariat. The Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat, which is the main state institution for all the estate and rural people, has been working for more than two hundred thousand people in the division since then.
